Freedom Research

The events of 9/11 have forever changed the landscape of Freedom: Freedom of movement—Freedom from search and seizure and the ordinary freedoms to which the American family has been accustomed in previous generations.  In the work place, employees are now rewarded because their “key stroke” count reveals that they are working, not talking.  Bonuses can be issued because random phone calls and e-mail monitoring reveal superior written and oral communication and a lack of personal activity while on the job.

The American legal system; however, affords little protection for its citizen's privacy even in the workplace.  Several groups have made unsuccessful attempts to invoke the 4th amendment of the constitution to protect against unlawful search and seizure of physical property, to include protection against privacy intrusion.  Surveillance, however, has become a billion dollar industry and such companies tend to have support in high places.  Recently, a government agency revealed that the government is working on a “controversial internet spying technology code-named ‘Magic Lantern’” which could be used to eavesdrop on computer communications.

The Al Queda network and Bin Laden have pilfered from the U. S. sophisticated communication equipment such as satellite telephones, etc.

We live in a highly technological society putting privacy and individual freedoms at riskThe Foundation for Family Dynamics has researched your opinions regarding these issues.  The following is the results on your responses:

Freedom Issues

Freedom and Privacy issues head up the list of issues facing parents and future generations. The results of our Poll is as follows:
   1. I will willingly yield up privacy rights                           6%
   2. Yielding privacy rights will both help and hurt              65%
   3. Yielding any rights will diminish freedoms                   25%
     4.  It is necessary to give up rights to protect my family    1%
     5.  It is necessary to give up rights to deal with terrorists 3%

Terrorism has been described as the "Forever War"  The results of our survey suggest thegiving up "Privacy Rights" will both help and hurt. It also suggests that our "Freedoms" will be diminished by yielding "Rights"  The most powerful suggestion appears to be that only 3% believe it is necessary to give up "Rights" to deal with terrorism.  We would be interested in what other measures could be adopted other than those already proposed.

The suggestion seems to be that yielding rights was only a means to an "End."  Is there something we are missing?
