10 Helpful Rules for Keeping Kids Safe

1.     Know where your young children are at all times.
2.     Keep them with others, if possible, there's protection in numbers.
3.     Make whoever they are with "responsible."
4.     Talk to your children about the rules of safety
5.     Rehearse safety rules and situations with your children
6.     Create some drama scenarios which pose danger and let your kids figure out what to do in outdoor settings.
7.     Most kids are abducted by family members or friends – discuss who is "a stranger."
8.     When it comes to who is "in possession" of the child," they do not have to be polite unless custody has been granted to that            individual.
9.     Teach your kids these facts about non-family abductors:

  • Usually less then 35 years old
  • Motives usually sexual

10.  Your child should:

  • Know his telephone number including area code
  • Know the phone number of a close family friend
  • Know that they are loved

       You should:

  • Have a recent mug shot of your child available
  • Have accurate physical description information at home, including clothing worn each day
  • Have medical and dental records available
  • Have fingerprints available
