- Families, by their very nature, are diverse - indeed, families are like boats on a river (steamships, tug boats, yachts, canoes, and kayaks). very diverse and life like the river has bends, sandbars, and rocks to be negotiated.

- Is the place people learn love and hate, joy and pain.

- Is a support system where children must learn to define themselves as persons with a belief and value system
