 Work Experience
  • 1999   Consulting, writing, work with foundations, volunteer work, chairman of the nonprofit corporation and director of the AIM call center. The call center was started in 1982 as a means of providing students work-study opportunities.  It typically employs about 80 students.
  • 1999     Retired from Andrews University(AU). In addition to the positions listed while at Andrews University actives as a teacher included instruction in courses from the following disciplines: Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Tests and Measurement, Teacher Education, Curriculum, Instruction and Supervision. Academic Rank and appointments included: Tenured Full Professor with joint appointments in the College of Technology, Department of Information and Computer Science; School of Education, Department of Teacher Education; and School of Graduate Studies, Departments of Computer and Information Science and Interdisciplinary Studies.
  • 1989-1999 AU Dean Continuing and Adult Education.
  • 1996-1997 AU Acting Graduate while search for new dean was occurring.
  • 1989-94 AU Registrar including responsibility for Office of Institutional Research.
  • 1980-89 AU Assistant to the President for Management Information and Planning.
  • 1973-80 AU Director Institutional Research; and Coordinator of Curriculum, Instruction and Teacher Education Progress. During this time he lead out in the establishment of a new doctoral program in Curriculum, Instruction and Supervision and chaired a number of doctoral dissertation committees.

Consulting Activities Consulting activities included work with (a partial list): The Benton Harbor Workforce Development Center, Benton Harbor Michigan; Billy Graham Foundation, North Carolina; Council for Exceptional Children, Reston VA; Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California; National Center on Instructional Media and Materials for the Handicapped, Columbus, Ohio; Northern Caribbean University, Jamaica; Oakwood College, Huntsville, Alabama; Orton, Society, Towson, Maryland; Science Research Associates; U. S. Bureau of Health, Education and Welfare, Washington, D.C.; and many parents, teachers, and elementary/secondary schools and school systems.
Development of New Journal In 1968 initiated and developed procedures for the computerized journal Exceptional Child Education Abstracts, now titled Exceptional Child Education_Resources.  This journal is stored in completely computer readable form. The journal contains annotated bibliographies of research and instructional materials useful to special education.  The journal is indexed via the computer and the contents is computer searchable through several library services.  All typesetting is done using the computer.  Procedures have also been developed to do computerized selective publication of special topics where documents are identified through computer searches, indexed using the computer, and computer typeset.  The Council for Exceptional Children has used these procedures to produce numerous annotated topical bibliographies.

In conjunction with the development of Exceptional Child Education Abstracts, a special library was also established which uses the journal and its indexes in place of a standard catalog system.  This library is located at the Council of Exceptional Children, Reston, Virginia.  The procedures used for maintaining the library have remained relatively unchanged since they were established in 1969.

    Elected Trustee for the Berrien Springs Public Schools(served for seven years)

    Major Author/writer on Numerous Funded Proposals Activities include proposals which receive funding from: the federal government, the state of Michigan, foundations, business and industry, and wealthy individuals.  The total funding related to proposals written is in excess of $10 million.

    Publishing an Editorial Activities. Activities included: articles, book chapters, and research reports in the areas of human growth and development, information science, computer supported instruction, and institutional research; in addition there have been numerous writing and primary editorial activities related to institutional accreditation reports, and professional accreditation reports in the areas of architecture, education, medical technology, and speech and hearing.

Family and personal information

Married in 1958 to Marie Louise Penner and have three children: Robert Don III, ( 1961); Cami Lynn Moon Cress, (born 1963); James Gordon, (born 1971).  All children are married and have stable families.   All of the children have completed University bachelor degrees and the two boys have completed masters degrees.  Marie Louise has completed a doctor's degree in teaching at Andrews University in the areas of teacher education with a particular emphasis in reading education.  Currently have six grandchildren (three boys and three girls). Both enjoy consulting and writing; regular and digital photography; videography; and travel, camping and hiking.
